Semaglutide is a weekly injection used for weight management. This treatment is FDA-approved to help obese or overweight adults lose weight they are struggling to shed with diet and exercise alone. In combination with a reduced calorie diet and an increase in daily movement, this weekly injection can assist patients in losing up to two pounds per week.
This medication works by mimicking the hormone glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) which is known to help regulate appetite and reduce food intake by slowing stomach emptying. This delayed stomach emptying signals the brain with feelings of fullness allowing the patient to feel less hunger and more satisfaction with smaller meals.
